The University of Ibadan, popularly called UI, was the first university in Nigeria. It was originally located at Yaba, Lagos. In 1948, the school moved to its permanent site at Ibadan.Its Faculty of Medicine was established in 1948,with the department of medicine being one of its foundation departments. Other departments like Radiology and Pediatrics, were later added to it. At that time, the University lacked basic facilities for medicine students, so its students were sent abroad to complete their training.

The first group of medicine students to go abroad to complete their medical training graduated in 1954. In the year 1957, The University Teaching Hospital was completed and clinical training started the same year. The school produced its first locally trained graduates in the year 1960, although, their certificates bear MBBS (London). From 1967 till date, the graduated students were presented with certificates that bear MBBS(Ibadan).

The contribution of the school to the training of Nigerian health care personnel is unrivaled. The school boasts of the title of ‘The Centre of Excellence in Medicine among Nigerian Universities’.This honor was conferred on the school by the then Federal Military Government during the 1977/78 session.Another noteworthy feat is that its Faculty of Medicine was the first to start post graduate training. It admitted its first student on the 9th of November, 1948.

In 1980, the Faculty of Medicine UI, underwent restructuring to become the present day College of Medicine.Today, the University has produced more than 7,000 medical doctors in Nigeria. It is said that 1 out of every 5 doctors is a graduate of The College of Medicine, UI.

Other schools that are noteworthy regarding studying medicine in Nigeria are;Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU),University of Ilorin,University of Benin (UNIBEN),University of Lagos (UNILAG),University of Nigeria (UNN),Niger Delta University (NDU).
